EBRD Sustainable Infrastructure Group and Green Cities Programme at the B40 Summit in Sofia

At the recent B40 Sofia Summit on 24 to 25 February, Donald Mishaxhiu, Regional Head Infrastructure, Western Balkans, Bulgaria and Romania - Sustainable Infrastructure Group, delivered a presentation during the panel discussion on "Local Climate Action: Strategies for Sustainable Urban Planning and Green Energy Initiatives." He shared examples from the EBRD Green Cities programme, emphasizing the critical role of innovative financing in driving climate action. Mr Mishaxhiu discussed how the EBRD Green Cities Programme supports cities in becoming more sustainable and resilient, presenting successful cases from Balkan cities. His presentation covered practical steps for executing climate action projects, including securing funding, engaging the community, and overcoming regulatory hurdles. Other panellists included Angelina Boneva, former Deputy Minister of Regional Development; Thomas Osdoba, Managing Director of Net Zero Cities; and Meropi-Spyridoula Ydraiou, Spokesperson on Environment and Climate (COR). The session underscored the importance of regional cooperation and innovation in achieving sustainable urban development.

 

The B40 Balkan Cities Network, initiated in 2021, aims to foster cooperation, sustainable development, and innovation among cities in the Balkan region. The B40 Summit is held annually, with each year a different city holding the presidency. The Summit gathers Balkan city mayors, deputy mayors, and other key actors on a common platform to discuss local challenges and way forward. Highlights at the Sofia B40 meeting included increasing regional climate resilience through sustainable urban development and green energy projects, as well as balancing technological innovation with cybersecurity.
